vintage base ball

Jeff "Pine Tar" Kornhaas, right fielder for the Hartford Senators, and Chris "Grit" Moran, the Senators' captain, organized a weekend of 19th century base ball at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. On Saturday, hourly workshops were given in the sculpture court on the history, equipment and rules of the 19th century game. Visitors had the opportunity to ask questions, check out the equipment, and have a conversation or a catch with a uniformed ballist. On Sunday, the Hartford Senators played a Picked Nine team of ballists from a variety of clubs in the northeast to play on the back lawn of the Fenimore Art Museum, a majestic (if uneven) expanse that slopes down to the banks of Otsego Lake. Some team members were not quite up to their usual game, having enjoyed a bit too much the merriment during the banquet on Saturday evening. The game concluded with all parties huzzah-ing, just before the rains arrived.
