5 Technological Advances That Are Changing MLB

Posted on May 4, 2022June 28, 2022 By Gerrard

We all like to hear news about technology. It keeps us going in times when we feel like the world is stagnating. Technology is brought and implemented almost everywhere when it goes past the testing phase. This is why we eagerly browse the internet and look at news sites, to find something that we will most likely be using in the future like a Honey coupon, a promo offer for our favorite games (Humble Bundle, hello!) or a website where we can read more on betfair promo code here.

For some people, the future is now. Sports are implementing technology as fast as possible, some taking charge. Baseball is one such sport, which is among the first to implement new technologies. Here are the most advanced technological advancements to have been implemented in baseball and are changing MLB.

VR Broadcasting

VR broadcasting is taking off in a lot of sports in the United States. Examples include basketball, namely the NBA, as well as baseball and MLB. MLB has started VR broadcasts relatively recently, only available through MLB.tv. There is another catch and that is that one has to use the Oculus Quest headset. This might turn some people away but it is still an opportunity to watch MLB in VR, which is otherwise unavailable. Something is better than nothing, in this case.

Given that there are AR stats embedded into the broadcast and that one can watch matches that date back to 2018 with this feature, we are likely to see it implemented in other sports, with fewer exclusive deals, hopefully.

Advanced Coaching

Coaching is always important, particularly at the highest level of competition. Team sports all need coaching and the better the ability to analyze data, the more coaches can do for their teams. MLB has made deals to supply coaches with advanced tablets that allow them to replay points and plays in slow motion, allowing thorough analysis.

This should help coaches improve the game, thus improving competition, allowing for better viewing experience.

Better Refereeing

This does not have to do with referees being better, but rather, a computer-assisted challenge, called an Instant Replay. This allows coaches to challenge a call and challenge once more if they win the first challenge. The challenge is AI-assisted, and can overturn a referee’s call, if it is opposite of the call. This method brings better accuracy refereeing, or rather, flawless refereeing, but it is slow. It takes time for the system to analyze a play.

Protective Gear Improvements

Baseball is a sport in which players can suffer many injuries. When the ball is hit, it can go in the direction of the players. It is a heavy and hard ball, and after it gets hit, it can achieve speeds which lead to injuries. Helmets for pitchers are something the MLB is working on. The helmets that are currently tested and tried are something that look more like a huge cap, which is in line with baseball. The better the protective gear gets, the safer the players will be, and if it can be stylish, everybody wins.

More Data for Everybody

There are plenty of sports fans who enjoy statistics. Statistics help and are very useful to both coaches and fans. There is a system called PitchF/x which helps track pitching and all the relevant statistics. This is great for anybody from sports bettors to coaches, and everybody else who loves data and data analysis.

Baseball is among the first sports to implement technology. These advancements are changing MLB. The future will likely have more changes in store.
